Little is known about this town prior to the 19th century. It was primarily settled by farmers, fishermen, miners and mango and banana plantation owners in the mid-1800s. Puerto Vallarta went “hollywood” with the filming of The Night of the Iguana in Mismaloya, a small town slightly south. The scandal of Richard Burton and Eliabeth Taylor’s affair put Puerto Vallarta on the map as a travel location. Since then, it has developed into Mexico’s premier resort town and is considered the most welcoming and gay-friendly destination in the country.
